Why The North?
The highest rate of food insecurity in Canada is in Nunavut. Without access to fresh, nutritional, affordable and culturally-appropriate food, Nunavut youth can not reach their full potential.
DueNORTH acknowledges that many factors intermingle to cause hunger and food insecurity. However, school breakfast programs can provide one solution to a complex problem.
Nutrition programs can provide both immediate and long-term benefits to children while simultaneously raising awareness of this major social issue amongst all Canadians.
We have established a long-term connection with Sakku School in Coral Harbour where we have set up a kitchen facility that feeds 90 children and youth each day. This year we will expand and support a second Nunavut school, Levi Angmak Elementary School in Arviat, by providing a hot breakfast program available to 370 students from Kindergarten to Grade 5.
Schools are still on the waiting list
Schools in Nunavut receive their non-perishable school breakfast supplies during the sealift months, typically late June to late October. Such transport prevents the shipment of fresh fruits and vegetables.
The exorbitant costs of fresh foods that are flown into Nunavut villages by air make it impossible for schools to include such items in their breakfast programs.
Donations can help these schools purchase these essential food items for Nunavut children.
